Have you ever heard the saying:
Breakfast like a King, Lunch like a Prince, Dine like a Pauper
Well, without wondering why a King wouldn’t feed his son as much food as he himself would eat… this saying brings in the age old debate of whether breakfast is the most important meal of the day….?
What do you think?
Personally I have led most of my life believing that it is, because that’s what I was told… but now I have a better understanding of nutrition, health and fitness I have to admit my opinions have shifted.
Lets look at the facts:
Breakfast comes after you have been asleep – a fasting period where you haven’t eaten anything in several hours.
Due to this your body will need to replenish its energy stores.
And just like a car, you can’t expect your body to get through the day ahead without any issues if it hasn’t first been topped up with fuel. If you attempt the journey with a low tank you risk breaking down on route.
So breakfast is clearly the most important meal, right?
Your body does the majority of its growing and repairing during the hours you are asleep; so surely the meal before bed is the most important as this provides your body with the energy/nutrients it needs to complete its daily maintenance.
And what about Lunch? Having a decent, balanced meal in the middle of the day keeps our bodies, and our minds, working efficiently. It also helps to curb our cravings to snack on all the quick fix sugary items that we could do with reducing from our diet.
So what is the answer?
Is Breakfast the MOST important meal of the day? Or are one of the other two higher in the ranking?
The truth is they are all important.
You need to be replenishing your energy levels regularly throughout the day with varied, balanced meals in order to ensure your brain and body are working efficiently. If you don’t you risk crashing, unable to perform at your optimum ability.
Food not only fuels our muscles and organs but also aids hormone distribution which effects our moods, our concentration and helps fight off illness. So basically food is important no matter what the time of day.
Some people work night shifts so wont have breakfast at the normal time, some people struggle to eat for a couple of hours when they first wake up and some struggle to sleep if they have eaten too soon before going to bed. We are all different. So there is no one size fits all when it comes to eating for our bodies.
As long as you’re ensuring that you’re getting all the nutrients and energy you require from your food and are replenishing your stores when you need to, so you can smash through your day, then when you are eating your meals isn’t that much of an issue. It’s more of an individual by individual answer.
So rather than trying to cram in a huge meal first thing, because you feel you need to, just try to make sure you are eating enough to replenish your energy stores; and if you have to wait a couple of hours after waking before you do this, that’s ok too.
Listen to your body. Be mindful of how you’re fueling and treating it. And you’ll be fine.
Curiously; what is your favourite breakfast? And what time is breakfast usually for you?
